Sonnenplatz in Emmen, Switzerland has entered a new phase thanks to a community initiative led by the local organisation FeEmmen. What was once a mere transit zone -lacking both seating and a welcoming atmosphere – has now been transformed into a vibrant place to stay and connect.

Urban Revival:
- Creating Inviting Stopovers: Previously a transit zone lacking both urban furniture and reasons to linger, Sonnenplatz has been transformed into a welcoming destination. With several new seating options, the space now fosters a greater sense of community and connection—whether you’re pausing briefly or meeting up with a friend.
- Community Participation: The modular design of the urban furniture makes it easy to co-create the space with the community. At Sonnenplatz, residents took part in the design process as well as the assembly, planting, and setup of the new pocket park—strengthening local ownership and pride.
- Greener Squares: Even small additions of greenery can transform grey urban spaces. With planters enhancing the environment, the square now feels softer, more human-scaled, and full of small wonders—bringing life, calm, and a sense of place.

The project in Emmen also marks the beginning of an exciting collaboration with BURRI Public Spaces in Switzerland. For both Parkly and BURRI, connecting people and contributing to a vibrant, democratic society is at the heart of our mission – and the Sonnenplatz project reflects these in a great way.
