Community Uplift: Vibrant Parkly modules renew Turku’s riverside into an approachable, and attractive destination.

Urban Greening: New greenery enhances urban aesthetics and contributes to the movement of greening our cities.

Functional Flexibility: Modular seating areas offer multifunctional spaces for relaxation and socialisation.

Parkly is dedicated to transforming urban spaces into green and vibrant places. In collaboration with the City of Turku, Parkly renewed the riverside area of Telakkaranta, creating a welcoming environment with modular pocket parks and seating areas that invite people to enjoy the river views.

The Challenge
The riverside area in Telakkaranta, while picturesque, was underutilised and lacked seating and greenery. The City of Turku wanted to enhance this space to make it more inviting for both residents and visitors. Parkly was commissioned to bring a modular, simple, and effective solution to help renew this empty space.

The Solution
Parkly introduced its vibrant, modular pocket parks inspired by the colour palette of the bollards. This installation serve multiple purposes:

  • Essential seating: Provides comfortable spots for people to relax and enjoy the riverside scenery.
  • Distinctive landmark: The colourful modules stand out, creating a unique and attractive urban feature.
  • Multifunctional design: The modular units can function as benches, picnic platforms and planters, adding both seating and greenery to the area.

Outcome measurement
Post-implementation observation shows:

  • Increased Usage: Rise in the number of people spending time in the area.
  • Diverse Demographics: Attracts a wide range of users, from families to tourists.
  • Peak Times: High engagement during evenings and weekends, indicating successful community integration.

“The need to increase recreational facilities in the area has been identified as it develops into a residential zone and as the number of outdoor recreationists along the riverside increases. Parkly was chosen because its modular elements allow for the creation of a varied seating and planting scheme that aligns with the historic character of the area in terms of urban design. Additionally, the potential for relocating, renovating, and modifying the complex influenced this decision.”
