Greener, More Colourful School Yards – Together!

Co-creating more welcoming school environments

Article Highlights:

Parkly is designed for co-creation
Our modular system is ideal for mix-and-match design, combining different modules to match users’ needs. The system also enables easy participation during installation — making it possible to build together, every step of the way.

Multifunctionality matters
Parkly modules can be used for seating, relaxing, playing, reading and gathering, while their playful forms also inspire spontaneous play. In schoolyards, multifunctional furniture serves many purposes, making it both cost-efficient and effective in bringing children together.

More greenery, more life
Many schoolyards are dominated by asphalt and lack greenery. While large renovations are not always feasible, even small green interventions can make a big difference. Planters are an accessible way to introduce nature directly into everyday school life, bringing plants closer to where children spend time. They can also spark curiosity and support learning about nature, biodiversity and insects.

More greenery – together. School in Bachenbülach participated and won the Schoolyard Challenge.

In Bachenbülach, a schoolyard challenge led by our partner Burri in Switzerland invited pupils to co-design a seating area where they can gather, connect and relax comfortably. At Deutsche Schule Helsinki, students had long wished for more greenery, colour and places to sit, read and spend time together in their multi-level schoolyard dominated with pavement.

In both schools, pupils participated enthusiastically in the installation and planting process. At Deutsche Schule Helsinki, students will soon also plant herbs for the school kitchen as part of the project.

When public spaces are co-created with their users, even small interventions can strengthen belonging, participation and everyday joy. In high-intensity environments like schools, durability matters too: furniture must be robust enough for constant daily use while still creating a playful and inviting atmosphere.

• Children know what their environment needs – and often ask for simple but meaningful improvements

• Participation creates ownership, pride and stronger connection to place

• Small spatial changes can have a big impact on everyday wellbeing and set the direction for the future direction

The enthusiasm of the pupils at both schools was contagious. As one participant said:
“Working together on it makes it much more fun!”
